Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden capped a brilliant year by winning the BBC Young Sports Personality award.

He helped England win the Under-17 World Cup and took the Golden Ball award for the tournament’s best player.

Foden, 17, also made his senior debut for Manchester City and became the youngest Englishman to start a Champions League match.

He was on a final shortlist of three for the BBC award, with gymnast Ellie Downie and Para-skier Millie Knight.

“It meant everything,” Foden said about being named the Under-17 World Cup’s best player. “But I would like to thank my team-mates, without them it wouldn’t have been possible.”

The winner was announced during the Sports Personality show in Liverpool on Sunday.

Footballer Wayne Rooney, tennis player Andy Murray and swimmer Ellie Robinson are among former Young Personality winners.

‘The Stockport Iniesta’

Foden scored twice as England’s youngsters came from behind to beat Spain 5-2 in October’s Under-17 World Cup final in India.

He made his City debut as a substitute in the win over Feyenoord in November and broke records when he started in the Champions League loss to Shakhtar Donetsk the following month:

  • Aged 17 years and 192 days, he was the youngest Englishman to start a Champions League match, beating the mark set by former Chelsea player Josh McEachran.
  • He is the first player born in the year 2000 to start a match in Europe’s top-level club competition.
  • Nicknamed the ‘Stockport Iniesta’ after the Barcelona midfielder, he does not turn 18 until 28 May, 2018.
